The Cloisters, a Medieval Style Monastery Building in New York

flat550x550075f The Cloisters, a Medieval Style Monastery Building in New York

In Uptown New York City stands a European-style monastery building fashioned on medieval architecture called The Cloisters.  It houses a branch of the prestigious Metropolitan Museum of Art.  What makes it particularly special is that many of the materials used to build The Cloisters are actually from Europe! More precisely, the stone was sourced from five French monasteries; Saint-Michel-de-Cuxa, Saint-Guilhem-le-Desert, Bonnefont-en-Comminges, Trie-en-Bigorre and Froville. The parts were broken down in France, shipped to the U.S. and reconstructed from 1934 to 1938. In addition to French resources, fragments from Germany, including church windows from Cologne, can be found in the buildings of The Cloisters.
